Stages of Labour

If television and movies were our only means of learning about childbirth, we would all be convinced that a woman’s labour begins when her water breaks, usually while she’s standing in line at the grocery store and surrounded by strangers who gasp as her amniotic fluid splashes on the floor. Fortunately, few labours begin with such drama. But if labour frequently starts without great fanfare, how is a mum to know that it has begun? Stages of Labour Let’s begin by looking at the stages of labour. In the first stage of labour, the cervix completely dilates and effaces. Dilation is the process in which the cervix opens. A woman is considered “fully dilated” (and ready to push) when her cervix opens to ten centimetres. Effacement is the process in which the cervix shortens and thins out. The first stage of labour is almost always the longest. For some women it lasts for days, but for others it may be…

When trying to conceive think about their due month and consider their age when starting school and where they will fit in to sporting teams. March to May either make them one of the oldest or one of the youngest at school but October to December make them young in their sporting events giving them sometimes big disadvantages.

Can you love all your children equally?

When I was expecting my second child, I wondered how I’d have enough love for both. By the time I had my third, I knew I had more than enough love to go around. The question was, would I like each of them equally? Well, not always, I have to admit. My middle child makes me quite insane sometimes, much more than the other two; she smiles the most angelic smiles when she says “No!” But that’s normal. The trick is to learn to enjoy and bring out the best in each child, whether they’re “easy” or “difficult” to live with. Different children have different personality types, and if you have more than one child, chances are pretty good that you’ll love them equally but that one will be more likely to drive you crazy. You’ll probably feel guilty about that, but experts say it’s natural for your personality to mesh better with one of your children than with the other(s). How do you avoid playing favourites? First of all, don’t compare your kids, especially within their…

When You Disagree About Having Another Baby

Deciding on the number of children to have can be difficult for many couples. It’s not like disagreeing on what to have for dinner: he wants Chinese, she wants Italian, so they compromise by having egg rolls with their pasta. The decision to add another child to a family is a lifelong commitment, and both parties must be on board. So what do you do if you and your partner are at a stalemate? Perhaps one of these couples’ solutions will work for you. Talk About the Real Issue Gwen and her partner, Drake, both 30, know all too well how difficult it is to meet in the middle. “Drake really wanted a third baby; he dotes on our sons and has always wanted a large family. I told him after the second child was born that I had my hands full with two, but he kept pushing the issue.” This might sound like a typical tug-of-war, but as is often the case with the baby debate, there were deeper issues for these two. “Drake is an engineer, and he was often away at a…

Circumcision?

The decision to circumcise your son is as personal as deciding whether to breastfeed him, co-sleep with him, or give birth to him at home or in a hospital. Thirty years ago circumcision was the norm in Australia, with 90% of all children undergoing the procedure. Today, the statistics are strikingly different. Only about 15% of newborns are circumcised, and the practice of circumcision is banned in all of Australia's public hospitals. (ABC News: Circumcision, June 2002) Australia is also the home to one of the world's most vocal circumcision advocates. He has not only touted the benefits of circumcision, but has also raised the ire of many doctors who believe that he is misleading the general public in the course of his crusade. So how are you to decide what is right for you and your sons? Here are some things that you might consider: Why Should I Consider Circumcising My Son? Religious belief is the primary consideration for choosing circumcision. For Jewish and Muslim families, circumcision…

Good Night, Sleep Tight

You've heard other parents complain about those first few sleep-deprived months after bringing home a baby, but nothing can really prepare you for the emotional and physical toll wrought by a baby that can't seem to get the hang of falling asleep and staying that way. Or you may have friends and family members who can't seem to stop talking about how their babies slept through the night as soon as they were home from the hospital. They never missed a wink of sleep, they'll tell you as you try to refrain from bonking them on the head with the nearest blunt object. The truth is that a baby's sleep personality-that is, how easy or difficult it is for them to fall asleep and stay asleep-is as individual as every other aspect of her personality. A baby who has difficulty falling asleep is no reflection on her parents or their abilities. Waking Up If you think about the time you spent in your own bed last night, chances are that you can remember waking up at least once. Your baby has the same…

The Family Bed: A Do or a Don't?

Evaluate Your Lifestyle It sounds simple, but the first consideration may be whether your bed is big enough to accommodate another person. Sure, your baby starts out small, but he still needs his own space. If you and your partner share a double bed, the discussion may be over before it starts; you probably don't have enough room for the two of you now, let alone adding your bundle of joy to the mix. A queen bed offers sufficient room for sleep-sharing, and a king is even better. Even experts who advocate sleep-sharing agree that there are certain conditions that make a family bed dangerous. You absolutely must not co-sleep if one of you is a heavy drinker, takes sleeping aids, or uses prescription or recreational drugs. These substances make you sleep heavily and slow your waking time. You must be able to create as safe a sleep environment in your bed as you would in your baby's crib. That means:• A firm mattress (absolutely no waterbeds)• No blankets or pillows around your…

Stretch Marks: Is it Possible to Avoid Them During Pregnancy?

Trust Your Genes-Not Creams There are quite a few old wives' tales regarding stretch marks and pregnancy-including height and the liberal application of lotion. Anna, 42, read that baby oil was the key to keeping stretch marks at bay. "Every morning, noon, and night, I would rub my belly with baby oil. It worked; I never got stretch marks." But Olivia, 26, had no such luck with that routine. "I bought the most expensive stretch mark prevention cream on the market and used it religiously. I was absolutely devastated when I got my first stretch mark during the 36th week of pregnancy. By the end, I had a belly full of them, and I was out hundreds of dollars on this stupid cream that didn't work. I'm convinced that you're either destined to get them or not, so don't waste your money."Unfortunately, science tends to side with Olivia. When skin stretches at a great rate over a relatively small period of time-like during pregnancy-it's natural for the skin to get itchy. So…

Choosing a Baby Carrier

Baby carriers come in several different styles, from simple cloth slings and wraps to more elaborate backpack-style carriers with aluminum frames for hiking with older kids. The most popular styles, however, allow the baby to ride on either the parent's chest or hip, facing inwards (for smaller babies) or outwards (for older babies who are better able to support their heads). As some baby carriers are made for babies and toddlers of different ages and weights, be sure that the one you choose is right for your child. Why Carry Your Baby in a Sling, Baby Wrap or Baby Carrier? There are a lot of reasons, from the emotional to the practical to the fashionable! First, the warm fuzzies: "Wearing" your baby is comforting, allowing the baby to feel your warmth, hear your heartbeat and smell your scent. A 1986 article in the journal Pediatrics found that babies who received "supplemental carrying" cried and fussed 43% less overall and 51% less at night. Many mothers have…

I started in 2002 with the birth of my first child, Ky.
Like most new mums I was constantly on the lookout for anything that could make life just a little bit easier. I was amazed to find that there were so many great ideas out there - a true testiment to the ingenuity of mums (and dads) in need.

Unfortunately, I soon discovered that many of the products I found while surfing around the web weren't easily available in Australia. Thus the idea for 'Just For Bubs' was born.
Since then I've made it my mission to bring as many great products to Australia as possible. It started with The Amazing Miracle Blanket which finally allowed me to swaddle my baby just like the nurses in the maternity ward. To this day, it remains our top seller and the product people most recommend to their friends.
But it hasn't stopped there. Since starting Just For Bubs I've had the good fortune to travel to various Baby Expos overseas and just keep finding great products. As always, I'm very excited to be able to offer them in Australia - sometimes for the first time.
I hope you find something you like at Just For Bubs

Baby sleep basics: 3 to 6 months

Typical sleep at this ageAt 3 months, most babies sleep a total of 12 to 15 hours a day, including nighttime sleep and naps.Sleep training opportunityTypically, by age 3 months or so, babies have started to develop more of a regular sleep/wake pattern and have dropped most of their night feedings. This doesn't mean you should suddenly impose a rigid sleep program on your 3- or 4-month-old. In fact, your baby may already have developed sleep patterns that fit in well with your family life. But if you'd like to help your baby sleep longer at a stretch and keep more regular hours, now might be a good time to try some type of sleep training.Keep in mind that every baby is on a unique developmental schedule. Observe how your child reacts to sleep training, and if she doesn't seem ready, slow down and try again in a few weeks.Sleeping through the nightAt some point between 3 and 6 months, most babies are capable of sleeping through the night. We're not talking about eight hours, though. "Through…

A pacifier may soothe a fussy baby

A pacifier may soothe a fussy baby. Some babies are happiest when they're sucking on something.

Pacifiers offer temporary distraction. When your baby's hungry, a pacifier may buy you a few minutes to prepare a bottle or find a comfortable spot to nurse. A pacifier also may come in handy during shots, blood tests or other procedures.

A pacifier may help your baby go to sleep. If your baby has trouble settling down, a pacifier might do the trick.

A pacifier may help reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Researchers have found an association between pacifier use at naptime and bedtime and a reduced risk of SIDS.

They're disposable. When it's time to stop using pacifiers, you can throw them away. If your baby prefers to suck on his or her thumb or fingers, it may be more difficult to break the habit.

It's a boy! It's a girl! Baby's big premiere

Spreading the happy newsWhen your little one arrives, no parent can wait to spread the news! From the simple to the creative, from the custom-printed to the do-it-yourself, you have a lot of choices available to you. Most commonly, birth announcements are sent via the local postal carrier. Such announcements, sent by the baby's parents, are usually in the form of a card with the baby's birth statistics. A picture of the baby can be included as an added treat. You may choose to have these imprinted with your baby's stats. Adorable blank, flat cards can be purchased and printed on your computer printer, using various fonts and ink colors. There are also some not-so-common ways parents can spread the happy news amongst family and friends. An announcement from an older child presenting his new sibling is a nice way to include a big brother or sister in the festivities. On a similar note, Kendeyl Johansen from Park City, Utah, took a picture of her toddler son with her newborn twins. The picture…

Birth plans: Taking a new look

Do they really work?Birth plans are written with great promise, but how often do they really deliver on that promise? Perhaps what you want is not routine for the doctor and hospital you've chosen. Sometimes a doctor or a nurse will go out of her way to accommodate you, but you can't count on it. These professionals will do what they think is best. Why should they act otherwise?Be aware that birth plans often give false hope -- you may believe you will get what you want because you put it in writing, but the signatures of health care providers are not legally binding. Many women have discovered that their birth plans are not much more than wish lists. Still, you need to think about your options -- writing up a birth plan forces you to organize your preferences. After all, if you don't know your options, you don't have any.Getting what you wantThese suggestions will help you get what you want for your VBAC:# Think of what each doctor offers as if it were as limited as a fast-food menu.…
